Neil Cloke had his physical and mental toughness tested to the absolute limit over the weekend, as he completed the 140 mile non stop Coast to Coast Ultra. Starting early Saturday morning, Neil set off from the start line at Whitehaven dock in the North West of England in perfect running conditions as he tackled the difficult off road sections of the Lake District and the Pennines. He experienced very testing conditions as he made his way overnight through the North Pennines, with gale force winds and rain making running difficult. Sunday saw a change of weather as he ran in hot conditions towards the finish early Sunday afternoon at Tynemouth. Neil finished an impressive joint 3rd, and his time of 30:54:00 was 5 minutes inside the previous course record, which highlighted what an impressive run it was. With the 140 miles distance completed, Neil overtook the previous club distance record of 85 miles, held by Steve Hickman.
Steve Hickman made a welcome return to marathon racing after injury, as he completed his 129th marathon at the Gloucester City marathon on Sunday. He completed the course in a time of 4:47:51.
At a very windy Samphire Hoe Summer Series 5k last Wednesday, three of the club’s runners battled through the tough running conditions to put in some very good performances. Chris Boyce was the first of the runner’s home, as he finished 6th in a time of 19:47, followed in by Anthony Brown in 15th place in 21:47. Rhian Shrimplin ran an excellent race to finish as the 3rd lady in the race and 23rd overall, in a time of 23:42.
